Dad Reveals How He Built This Platform Storage Bed From Kitchen Cabinets

There are plenty of things you have to consider when looking for a new bed. After all, the importance of a good night's sleep has been well-documented as far as our mental and physical health are concerned.

In short, you want a bed that is comfortable and one that fits in with your personal style. It's also likely that sizing will be taken into consideration. Beds inevitably take up a lot of space, and this can be problematic if your room is on the smaller side. That's why you should think about building a platform storage bed so you can save on space.

Seriously, you could end up with this very handy, contemporary storage bed by following the steps below!

Step 1

Use these measurements as your base. A standard full-size mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. Make you sure you use three of the widest cabinets you can purchase from IKEA (24x15x30) - or any other store - to use along the side of the bed and four cabinets of varying heights at the foot of the bed to create steps.

Step 2

Assemble all seven of the cabinets but do not install the back on one of the big cabinets. That's so it can be used to access the crawlspace underneath.

Step 3

Use wood clamps to screw the cabinets together, with two screws on the front and one screw near the back.

Step 4

You will need a 1x4 pine boards for this step. Mark the height of the frame on the wall and use a stud finder to mark the studs. Then drill two pilot holes in the board at every stud before screwing the board to the wall.

Install another framing board at the back of the cabinets and use a piece of the unused back to fill the space next to the steps. Keep it in place using glue.

Use another two pine boards to support the center of the bed.

Using 1x4 pine boards, cut 12 slats the width of the frame. The first one can be used as a pattern to mark the rest. Drill three pilot holes in each of the slats and attach them to framing at each end and the middle.

Get the mattress out and test your work so far.

Install the last door on the access cabinet. It's the one with no back and no shelf and will allow you to access the crawl space underneath the bed for storage.

Step 10

Dress up the top of the cabinets using affordable panelling. Cut it to size and hold it in place with double-faced carpet tape.

You might want to install a small light under the bed so you can see inside the storage area.

And voilà, you have your very own platform bed with plenty of useful storage space, not only in the cabinets but also in the crawlspace underneath the bed.
