PUZZLE CRAFTS

Fun ways to make a puzzle from scratch!

Photo Sliding Puzzle

You will need:

  • Cardboard
  • Scalpel
  • Printed photo
  • Glue
  • Cutting mat

Method:

  1. Begin by placing the photo over the cardboard to work out how big you want the border to be (trim down the cardboard if necessary).
  2. Trace around the photo and then using a cutting mat and scalpel, cut out the traced section, leaving you with a frame.
  3. Use the piece you cut out to stick the photo onto.
  4. Cut the photo into a square grid and leave to one side.

TOP TIP: Cut off the corners to help the photos move around easier.

  1. Use the outside of the frame to trace around onto another piece of card, and cut out. This will be your base.
  2. Cut strips of card and stick onto the base, around where the photo will go.
  3. Now stick the frame on top.
  4. Finally, place the photo grid inside, leaving one out. Make sure they all fit and can move around easily.
  5. Now you can enjoy figuring out the sliding puzzle!

Snake Alphabet Puzzle

You will need:

  • Coloured foam sheets
  • Scissors
  • Letter Stickers
  • Pencil
  • A3 white card

Method:

  1. Start by drawing a snake onto A3 card (long enough to fit the alphabet in).
  2. Cut out the drawing.
  3. Draw puzzle shapes on the snake for each letter of the alphabet.
  4. Cut out these shapes.
  5. Then start to trace them each onto different coloured foam sheets and cut them out.
  6. They should all fit together nicely to create the whole snake!
  7. Now start to stick on the letters, going from A to Z.
  8. The puzzle is now done for kids to enjoy and use as a fun learning tool at the same time!

Fish Puzzle

You will need:

  • White foam board
  • Mermaid paper-craft sheets
  • Scalpel
  • Cutting mat
  • Pencil
  • Glue

Method:

  1. Draw a fish shape onto a piece of foam board.
  2. Using a scalpel (adults only!), carefully cut out the fish shape on top of a cutting mat.

TOP TIP: Make sure to keep a hold of the outside cutout of the fish. You will need this later!

  1. Draw shapes onto the fish in sections.
  2. Cut these out with a scalpel.
  3. Grab a hold of the different styles of mermaid/aquatic designed paper and layer the first sections over a design and trace around it.
  4. Repeat this step with the next sections and different designs, sticking each traced paper on to the foam board.
  5. They are now ready to be placed into the outside of the cutout you have saved, to piece the puzzle together and turn back into a fish!
