Amazon to make one-day shipping free for all Prime customers

Isn't it incredible? Years ago, the idea of getting anything and everything delivered to your front door at the click of a button was something too ridiculous for an episode of Star Trek. Yet, with Amazon the future is here, and wouldn't you know, it's about to get even better.

By now, you're probably familiar with Amazon Prime - where you can open yourself up for plenty of perks, including a video streaming service, for a nominal annual fee. But it gets even better, folks!

Amazon Prime is rolling out one-day shipping, and that'll make things a total breeze.

At the moment, free one-day delivery is only available to Prime customers when they spend over $35, otherwise you're going to have to wait two days if you want to buy a set of whiteboard pens, forget that you ordered a set of whiteboard pens, and order a second set before you realise what happened (to give a random example that definitely did not happen to me).

But starting very, very soon, Amazon Prime members will be able to receive their whiteboard pens in an even more efficient and timely manner, as this new development will allow for one-day delivery of certain items. No word yet if whiteboards will be part of this deal. I certainly hope so.

"[Next-day delivery] opens a lot of potential for purchase and convenience for those customers," Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told investors. "We really think it's going to be groundbreaking for Prime customers, and we’re really excited to add his capability. "

Describing the new developments as an "evolution", Olsavsky said this was the end-result of around 20 years of investment, during which time Amazon has become a massive retail online leader in reliable fast shipping, blowing away the likes of Walmart and Target in the process.

If you're reading this in Japan or Europe, however, you're probably wondering: what's the big deal? Of course, out there, they've been working with next day and even same-day delivery for quite a while now.

Still, it's pretty neat that America has finally caught up, right?
